Not a typical holiday, Sadie Hawkins Day is the invention of Al Capp, 
creator of the Li’l Abner comic strip. Capp conceived of a day in Dogpatch, U.S.A., when all the unmarried ladies could pursue (literally) their men. If caught, the hapless bachelors were soon trudging down the aisle. This fictional world so captured people’s imaginations that Sadie Hawkins Day passed into the realm of modern folklore. The first Sadie Hawkins Day took place in November 1938. Today, it’s usually celebrated on the second Saturday in November to accommodate all the "girls-ask-boys" school dances and other events.

My school didn\’t have a Sadie Hawkins dance, but my kids\’ high school did, and my tall,handsome son was a much sought-after commodity in those years, not only by the girls at his own school,but by girls from several other schools as well. He had a date for Sadie Hawkins every year………..and probably could have gone to more dances after he graduated, with his younger sister\’s friends.
This was a wonderful blog and clips. I do remember reading \’Lil Abner\’ and how \’Sadie Hawkins Day\’ came about… but have never appreciated the movie more than seeing parts of it again in these clips. Whoever wrote "the country\’s in the very best of hands" should get a medal if they are still alive. I almost fell on the floor laughing. Thanks for giving me a great remembrance back and a lot of humor. I had to call K to come and enjoy this with me. Hugs!

Great blog! I remember the Sadie Hawkins dances when I was in school and I was always too shy to asky a boy so I never went to that one…LOL! Hope you are doing well.

Hi Patricia, thank you for your comments. I don\’t know much about Sadie Hawkins day, but it\’s nice to have days that we can think or dream about the old times or days. I just find out how to use youtube to watch TV soap from Hong Kong, don\’t know its good or bad, I spent too many hours on it, I did cut it down now. Need time to do my Engish home work. 😦

I have not thought about Sadie Hawkins Day in a zillion years. I maybe should go to a dance…you never know. I remember when comics first came in color. I use the funny pages for wrapping paper and nobody ever complained…
Oh that brings back a lot of memories… Go to church and stop at the drugstore on the way home to pick up a newspaper … come home.. dad would read the sports and the rest of the paper and I would read the funnies and then help mom with dinner… Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. hugs, lottemae
